Free Simple DMX lighting control software for Mac miniStageConsole A simple 24 channel memory light board with unlimited cue memory and manual or auto timed cross fades. It includes a command-line keyboard interface that uses commands similar to popular lighting consoles (ETC Express). This software is designed for conventional theatrical lighting. It works in a way that is easy to understand for a person who does theatrical lighting. It does not have features for moving lights, fancy chasing and nightclub-style control. This software supports MIDI input so that you can use a MIDI control surface such as the BCF2000 to move faders and press buttons, or use show control programs such as QLab to command miniStageConsole. Requires an Enttec.com DMX USB Pro interface that costs about $150.

Free download at. I've started using LC edit at The Crescent Theatre in Birmingham. It's a steep learning curve but I think it's going to be worth it. The first effort was a disaster but the second go has been fine. It beats our strand desk or the dreadful ETC thing we have. In fact the ETC thing is the reason why I decided to take the plunge and spend my own money. It's also worth considering the cost.

£450 for the Lanbox plus £800 for the iMac against £3000 (that's what I was told we had spent) on the ETC. I could have got a cheaper second hand Mac and a less sophisticated version of the Lanbox. On top of that, for a bit more money you can just keep a spare Lanbox in the theatre. If your primary one fails you could be up and running in minutes. If the computer fails you can nick the admin office PC for the night, download the software, and again, you'd be up and running in minutes.

This assumes you've backed up to a remote server or a portable hard drive.
